Forty Ipsum: epic filler text

The next time you are in need of filler text, reach for Forty Ipsum instead of your old standby.

We took turns creating this tale of the Sky Admiral Aloeicious, his wife Reginia, and his trusty steed Areion — one line at a time. It’s a quest of truly epic proportions. Or at the very least, way more entertaining than what you’re used to.

  1. How did you create that text for the Forty Ipsum graphic? It’s so cool how it really looks imprinted on there.

  2. Lauren, it’s the magic of Photoshop :) If you want to see the exact method I used, feel free to download this layered PSD: fortyagency.com/files/forty-ipsum.psd.zip

I used one of my absolute favorite Photoshop features — mask layer with clipping mask — to mask the noise layer to the type layer. You put the noise layer on top of the type layer, and on the layers palette you option-click on that thin grey line between the two layers. This tutorial explains more: http://forty.cc/r7ZMhZ. I pretty much use this technique in every Photoshop file I make.

  3. It’s like a game of Mad Libs gone wild!

  4. Mike, it totally is! I used to love Mad Libs as a kid. Now that you mention it, they have a lot in common with our improv activities.

  5. I’ve recently created a site for generating different kinds of filler text, you should check it out if you get the time:

    http://www.organicipsum.com

    Thanks, love the app ;)

  6. Allen, that’s impressive! Are these some of your personal favorites? I think if I picked a TV show to lorem-ipsum-ize it would be Seinfeld ;)

What do you think?
